Following the mixed response to their previous album, POP, All That You Can’t Leave Behind can be described as U2’s return to a more mainstream form. The band is known to have experimented with alternative rock and dance music in the 1990s. Several songs in this album still retained elements of this experimentation.
Rolling Stone considered the band’s 10th studio album their “third masterpiece,” adding that it “is all about the simple melding of craft and song.” ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ received positive reviews from critics, with NME welcoming back U2’s “chiming guitars, the stratospheric synth – best of all – the tunes…Gone are the experimental ambitions and Big Ideas… Its beauty is in subtlety rather than extravagance…”
The record reached No. 1 in 32 countries, selling over 12 million copies and making it the fourth highest-selling U2 album. It included hit singles Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of. It grabbed seven Grammy Awards – three in 2001 and four in 2002 – and was the only album in history to do so with multiple tracks. A version of the song ‘Elevation’ released as a single on June 12, 2001, the ‘Tomb Raider Mix,’ featured in television commercials for the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
U2 long-time photographer Anton Corbijn shot the photograph on the album cover. The location – the Roissy Hall 2F of the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France – is also where the music video for ‘Beautiful Day’ was shot.
